Sufficient Water Supply
Our Position: support
Bill Number: HB1141
Sponsor: Representative Curry and Senator Bacon
Legislative Session: 2008
This bill would require a real estate development permit to demonstrate a sufficient and sustainable water supply prior to the land development for more than 50 units or single-family equivalents. It would ensure that there is an adequate supply of water available for peak daily, monthly, and yearly water requirements and a report from a registered professional engineer must be submitted regarding the proposed development's water demands. Local government would then be required to verify the reported data.

Background
Imagine buying a new home only to find that there is not enough water to meet your familys daily needs due to a lack of a sufficient water supply in the area. You have invested a lot into your new home; you should not have to worry if you are going to have water flowing from your taps in 2, 10, or 20 years. Our government should be able to help ensure that development is located near a sustainable water supply. Colorado is in a time of growth, which means that more and more homes will be built in the near future. We need to make sure that those homes are going to have enough water years down the line. This bill will give local governments the authority to make informed decisions regarding new development and sufficient water supplies.
