Topographic Map Workshop

Thursday February 12th 2004

The Indian Peaks Group sponsored a seminar on Working with Topographic Maps during the evening of Feb 12 that was taught by Ed Crothers of the Colorado Mountain School. Ed ensured each participant developed a thorough understanding on how to interpret the various facets of topo maps, from 7.5 minute designations, to various color markings, and to contour intervals. Ed used an ingenious clay model to demonstrate how ridges, valleys, couloirs, and stream direction could be readily picked out on topo maps. He also offered a creative trip planning time model that the attending Sierra Club Outings Leaders will find very valuable. Many questions were asked, and each one was patiently answered, with good humor thrown in to make the learning experience fun as well. Kudos to Ed for conducting an outstanding workshop!

Thank you to Outings Chair Dave Hawley for the photograph.
