Button Rock Dam Hike

Hike June 15th 2003

Look at Longs Peaks in the distance on the left. It seems to be booming "Hike Me! Hike Me!". But not this weekend Mr Long. This sun-squinting but otherwise happy-to-be-outdoors hike group looped Button Rock Dam on Sunday. As you can see, a large bucket of sunscreen was priority number one and the blazing blue sky accompanied them all the way.

Button Rock is not a tough hike but takes in some very attractive alpine meadows on the Sleepy Lion Trail and then returns to the dam trail via dam chute, which despite the gratuitous waste of energy is always a thrill to witness, especially when you are seeking something cool and refreshing. Not this refreshing though, this would probably refresh your head clean off your shoulders.

Two fresh rookie outings leaders were pointing the way and despite their newness, it seems that everyone had a good hike, no-one was lost and nobody bumped into a sleepy lion. So congratulations to new outings leader Deirdre Butler for her first lead and well done to Reg Gupton for his first co-lead following his recent completion of Sierra Club outings leader training.

The Outings Group has the intention of offering a hike every weekend of the year during 2003. Why not try one soon? Thanks to David Hawley for the great photographs.
