Minutes

September 6th 2006

1. INTRODUCTIONS.

Those present were: Linda Batlin, Kirk Cunningham, Mary Skumanich, and Todd Sanford

2. DISCUSSION WITH CU WILDERNESS STUDY GROUP LEADER, SPENCER UNGER.

Spencer would like to explore possible joint programs and other work with the IPG, but could not attend this meeting. His email address is WSG@colorado.edu. Kirk met with him several days after this meeting and he said that he would like to organize a joint Sierra Club/WSG meeting on the Roan Plateau EIS, on the CU campus, and perhaps with someone from The Wilderness Society or the Colorado Environmental Coalition as presenter.

3. BRAINSTORMING ABOUT THE CONSERVATION
COMMITTEE DISPLAY AT THE SEPTEMBER 7TH IPG
VOLUNTEER PROGRAM.

As the result of discussion at the meeting and information from Wildlife Chair Deirdre Butler, a handout for the meeting (and any subsequent events) was created, as shown in the file attached to these minutes.

4. UPDATES FROM ANY SUBCOMMITTEE CHAIRS OR ISSUE SPECIALISTS PRESENT

* Todd Sanford, National Forest management specialist, reported on the September 2nd wetland restoration outing on National Forest land around Yankee Doodle Lake near Rollins Pass. About 20 people attended, including six from the Sierra Club. A couple local four-wheel-drive clubs had done some impressive preliminary work at the site, building sturdy fences to motorized vehicles out of the wetlands. The work on the 2nd consisted mostly of willow planting.
* The IPG is still searching for someone to follow open space management issues. One possible such person identified himself to Kirk, but he is also interested in other issues, so we will see how that works out.
* Bill Ikler, IPG Wilderness issue specialist, attended a recent Gilpin County meeting on proposals to restore the Needles Eye Tunnel and associated trestles near Rollins Pass. He will report on that meeting next month. This project was part of the compromise that allowed the James Peak Wilderness to be created, however, any reconstruction will not be financed by the federal government, only Gilpin County.
* Kirk has been working with other groups and individuals on the contract renewal for Boulder County's Mosquito Control District. We believe that the present contractor is not placing enough emphasis on killing mosquito larvae, as opposed to adult mosquito spraying.

5. Adjournment.

The meeting was adjourned about 8 pm.
