Boulder Transit Village Plan Taking ShapeDuring the past 18 months, the Indian Peaks Group’s Sprawl and Transportation Committee has been deeply involved in the city of Boulder’s planning activities for the Boulder Transit Village. Encompassing 160 acres surrounding the future FasTracks train and bus stations near 30th and Pearl Streets in central Boulder, the vision for the Transit Village includes a pedestrian-friendly area with easy access to transit, energy-efficient and affordable housing, and environmentally sustainable design and building practices. The Transit Village may even include a business park for environment-friendly industry. In public meetings and testimony before the Boulder Planning Board and City Council, the Sprawl and Transportation Committee has advocated for creating a vibrant, leading edge, and environmentally sustainable neighborhood, with efficient pedestrian and bicycle connections, design standards that require high-efficiency or even carbon-neutral development, and a proper balance between new jobs and new residents. In the next several months, the final plan for the Transit Village area will be reviewed and approved by the Planning Board and City Council. Your Sierra Club will continue to push for a plan that creates the Boulder Transit Village as a regional, even national, example of how to guide development in a 21st century city – an economically viable and environmentally sustainable neighborhood beloved by the people who live, work, learn, and play in Boulder.
