Come and see a first hand account of exploring the Arctic from National Geographic Society explorer Jonathan Waterman. Jonathan has spent considerable time in the Arctic gathering data in order to give it lasting protection. His talk is sure to be a compelling experience.

In summer of 2006 the National Geographic Society sent Jonathan Waterman on an Arctic Traverse to investigate the accelerated effects of climate change and to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the study that led to the creation of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Accompanied by several graduate students and the legendary naturalist, George Schaller (who worked in the 1956 field study as a grad student), the expedition discovered melting permafrost, unnatural predation of nesting birds, brushed over tundra, disappearing glaciers, and a boreal forest, according to one renowned scientist, that may soon prove an unsustainable resource. One of the students duplicated 31 archival photos that show radical climate change. Add an oilfield to the Arctic Refuge with nitrous oxide emissions, leaking pipelines, and disruptive heavy equipment (like the Prudhoe Bay oilfield) and the damage will be irreversible.

Jonathan's presentation, co-sponsored by the IPG at CU, is part of a one year of intensive tour to publicise the Arctic.

Don't miss it!
