Moonlight Snowshoe: Brainard Lake - Jan 22, 2005 (Saturday) Join the Indian Peaks Group, Sierra Club, on this moderate snowshoe hike by the light of the full moon. Depart Boulder 5pm and on trail by 6pm. Rolling 4-5 mi RT at 10K elev with 600’ elev gain. Participants need to be in good physical condition and able to snowshoe at a moderate rate so we are back to cars by 10pm. Stunning views of Indian Peaks, weather permitting. Hike: Ouzel Falls Snowshoe / Gourmet Lunch - Jan 30, 2005 (Sun) Join the Indian Peaks Group, Sierra Club, in a moderate snowshoe hike along the North Saint Vrain Creek to Ouzel Falls. An easy trail thru a scenic wooded area with one moderately steep section. 6-8 mi RT (depending on where the road is closed), w 1,000’ elev gain. Join the Indian Peaks Group, Sierra Club, in an easy 4-6 hour snowshoe outing that has great views of Hallett Peak, Flattop Mountain, and Longs Peak. 3.6mi RT, w about 605’ elev gain – starts at 9,475’. Past Nymph Lake, then Dream Lake – framed by limber pines, and up to Emerald Lake. Wonderful scenery – great for photographers! Max 12 participants. Sourdough Hike/Snowshoe - Feb 12, 2005 (Saturday) Join the Indian Peaks Group, Sierra Club, in a moderately difficult hike along a densely forested section of Roosevelt National Forest just past Nederland. Off the peak-to-peak highway, this areas offers varied hilly terrain with thick pines and small brooks. Participant limit 12. 6mi RT. Snowshoe Hike: Fern Lake - Feb 13, 2005 (Sunday) Join the Indian Peaks Group, Sierra Club, in a moderately strenuous climb on a gorgeous trail to Fern Lake in the Rocky Mountain National Park. Charms along the way include Windy Gulch Cascades, Fern Falls, and Marguerite Falls. Fern Lake is at 9,500’ elev, and Fern Falls is a photographer’s prize. 7 mi RT with 1,345’ elev gain. Four-Legged Friend Hike in South Boulder - Feb 19, 2005 (Sat) Join the Indian Peaks Group, Sierra Club, in an easy mid-morning hike of 4-5 miles length, with about 300’ elev gain - limited to 6 humans and 6 leashed dogs. Snowshoe Hike: Mills Lake - February 26, 2005 (Sat) Join the Indian Peaks Group, Sierra Club, to celebrate Rocky Mountain National Park's 90th anniversary with a hike to one of the Park’s most beautiful lakes, Mills Lake, named after Enos Mills, a naturalist whose tireless work helped to establish the area as a National Park. Learn some of the history of the Park as we snowshoe the winter trail to Mills Lake. We’ll hike along and on top of frozen Glacier Creek, a moderately difficult hike of about 5mi RT with 700’ elev gain. Full Moon Hike: Big Bluestem Trail - Feb 26, 2005 (Saturday) Join the Indians Peak Group, Sierra Club, as we enjoy the sights, conversation and crisp, fresh air while hiking beneath a full moon. We will do a moderately paced 4 mile loop on the Mesa and Big Bluestem Trails near Eldorado Springs. There is an 800ft elevation gain in the first half of the hike to warm us up and then it is all downhill. Consider ten essentials. Participant limit is 12. Hike: Boulder’s Green Mountain - March 20, 2005 (Sunday) Join the Indian Peaks Group, Sierra Club, in this beautiful peak hike in early spring conditions. At the top enjoy beautiful views of the Indian Peaks and Boulder. We will start from Chautauqua Park and take the Saddle Rock / Gregory Canyon Trail. Strenuous, 6.5mi RT, 2,700’ elev gain. Cross Coutry Ski Outing - Winter Park - March 20, 2005 (Sun) Join the Indian Peaks Group, Sierra Club for a day of cross-country or skate skiing at the YMCA of the Rockies, Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic Center, Winter Park. Have you ever wanted to try these sports? It isn't as difficult as you think! Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic Center has miles of trails for all levels, and beautiful scenery! Trail fee is $12, and you can rent equipment for $13 and/or take a lesson for $17/hour, and our leaders will be providing advice on how to get the most out of your glide. This outing is open to all levels of skiers. We will carpool from Boulder so riders please bring extra cash to reimburse drivers for gas. If you have a ski rack, please let me know when you sign up for the trip. It takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to drive to Snow Mountain Ranch. Road Bike Ride: Bear Lake - April 16, 2005 (Sat) Join the Indian Peaks Group, Sierra Club, on a ride through Rocky Mountain National Park from the Fall River entrance to Bear Lake. A moderate ride of about 30m RT through the scenic national park with about 2000’ elev gain/loss. We will ride at a moderate pace of about 15 miles an hour, stopping to take in the landscape and wildlife. We will have lunch at Bear Lake and then return by the same road. A short easy hike of 3m w 200’ elev gain. Pawnee Buttes is home to falcons, golden eagles, and hawks. We will take time to photograph the landscape and wildlife in the fading light of day and then return after dark. I will offer some photographic tips and instruction as needed. Participant limit 12. A scenic ride from the valley floor to Fall River Pass at 11,800' - a hard 9-mile climb. We will ride along Fall River with many small waterfalls and stunning vistas of the valley below. DOW biologist Mike Crosby and retired biologist Jim Liewer will be on hand to explain the archeological, paleontological and biological importance of this area. This will be an easy hike at a leisurely pace - about 3 miles with 500' elev gain. There are plans to add 4WD roads to this area which are certain to change this environment. Start hike at Bear Lake and climb through woods, starting with old, stunted Aspen and progressing to Lodgepole Pine for about the first half mile, then flatten out thru a dense forest to and around the lake. After the lake we'll hike down a morraine slope with switchback trails. 4-6 hour hike. Max 12 participants. Sierra Club, in this exploration of Homestead Meadow, a large open
meadow with numerous old cabins dating back to the 1800's. Several
cabins are close to the entrance to the meadow, while others are
spread out over several miles. We will set up "base" at
the cluster and allow for some time to explore the farther reaches
for those interested. Others can spend this time identifying wildflowers,
which should be abundant. 7,360 to 8,400 ft (1,040 gain), 6 mi RT.
The route rises steadily with a few brief stony and steep segments,

hat, Email Sylvia Post-Card Camping Trip - Jun 25-27, 2005 (Sat-Mon) Join the Indian Peaks Group, Sierra Club, in this fantastic 3-day back-pack trip in the heart of the Indian Peaks Wilderness! On Sat we will drive from Boulder to Grand Lake via the famous Trail Ridge Road in the RMNP. From the Monarch Lake Trailhead (near Grand Lake) we will hike up, via the Cascade trail, to the Crater Lake Camp Site, where we will be staying the first night. Crater Lake, approx. at 10,400, is in a post-card location! We will set up camp, relax, and have dinner. On Sun we will break camp very early, and move our tents near Pawnee Lake. Then we will hike up to the Continental Divide and climb Pawnee Peak, 12,943, Mount Toll, 12,979, and perhaps Shoshoni, 12,967, on Class 2 routes. Awesome views from everywhere! Return to camp. On Mon we will head back and return to the Monarch Lake Trailhead along the Cascade Trail. Drive back to Boulder is via Winter Park and I-70. Need to be very fit and have had backcountry camping experience to participate. Limited to 9 participants. Hike: Little Yellowstone Hike - July 2 (Saturday) Join the Indian Peaks Group on a scenic hike on the western side of Rocky Mountain National Park to little Yellowstone. The trail follows an easy grade along the Colorado River through a lodgepole pine and spruce forest with a good chance for elk and moose sightings. Moderate hike - 9.5mi RT w 1,100’ elev gain. Hike: Mt Audubon Peak (13,223’) - July 3, 2005 (Sunday) Join the Indian Peaks Group, Sierra Club, on this strenuous ascent in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Brainard Lake area. Among 13ers, Audubon is considered relatively easy, but distance each way is 3.8mi, and the elev change is 2,723’ (1,000’ during the last mile), so being in shape is important. Must carry wind jacket & pants, ski hat, and gloves, and wear strong boots. Can snow / sleet in mid-summer, so do not wear cotton. Great views. Bring ten essentials. Participant limit 12. Hike: Arapahoe Pass Hike - Jul 3, 2005 (Sunday) Join the Indian Peaks Group, Sierra Club, for a moderate hike up the 4th of July Valley to Arapahoe Pass on the Continental Divide. Start at about 10,000’ and hike up a moderate grade. 6 mi RT, with about 2,000’ elev gain. Great flowers, waterfall, and scenic views. Limit 12 participants. Contact Deirdre Butler 303-823-8649 Hike: St Vrain Mountain - Jul 16, 2005 (Saturday) Fantastic Views of the Indian Peaks Wilderness and the RMNP - Join the Indian Peaks Group, Sierra Club, in this an exciting hike to the top of scenic St. Vrain Mountain at the boundary of the Indian Peaks Wilderness and the Rocky Mountain National Park. This difficult trail winds up steeply to reach, above treeline, the east ridge of St. Vrain Mountain, from which the St. Vrain Mountain's summit is an easy bushwhack. RT approx.10m, with elev gain approx. 3,600’. Early start, return to cars by mid-day. No cotton, dress in layers and bring wind/rain gear, snowshoes/yak tracks, good boots or equivalent. We will drive up Fall River Road to the trail head, and from there it is just 1.5 miles to the first peak. One peak is 12,000’, and the other two are 13,000’ peaks, and all three offer stunning views of the Park. We will start early and try to do all three peaks, weather permitting. Hike After Work: Eldorado Canyon - Jul 20, 2005 (Wed) Join the Indian Peaks Group for a late afternoon hike along the north side of Eldorado Canyon. The trail begins with a series of heart-pounding switchbacks but then levels out into a series of rolling climbs. Views include various climbing areas and the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad to the south and the Continental Divide to the west. While the trail continues into Mountain Parks land, we will turn around - approximately 3 miles from the start, so the RT distance will be about 6 miles, with about 1,000’ gain. Our goal is after work fitness, so a moderate pace will be set. There is a fee to get into the park, so we will car pool and share the fee. The pass is on the Continental Divide between Pawnee Peak and Shoshoni Peak. An easy scramble takes you from the pass to the top of Pawnee and Toll. We will meet Tues 8/23 for a short class on the basics of backpacking, then Fri 8/26 head to Rocky Mountain National Park for a two-day trip. We will hike to and camp at Odessa Lake, and then the next day on to Fern Lake, Fern falls and out into Moraine Park. This is a moderate difficulty hike that starts at Bear Lake, climbs up and traverses around Flattop Mountain, and then winds through the spectacular Odessa gorge. Seminar: Altitude Sickness - Oct 18, 2005 - 7pm (Tuesday) Join the Indian Peaks Group, Sierra Club, for a fascinating 90-minute presentation by Dr. Linda Keyes, on the types, treatment, and prevention of altitude sickness. Dr. Keyes is a Yale Med School graduate and an emergency physician at Lutheran Medical Center and University of Colorado Hospital. She has been conducting altitude medicine research since she was a medical student, studying pregnancy at high altitude and acute mountain sickness. She spends as much time as she can climbing, trekking, and generally having fun at high altitude, and she has extensive high altitude medicine experience that includes working at the Himalaya Rescue Association Clinic at 14,000’ in Pheriche, Nepal, and as the expedition doctor on the Colorado Gangapurna expedition. This outing is a four-hour practical field exercise in using a global positioning system so you always know where you are. In the process, we'll cover between 5 and 7 miles of this great open space park in the foothills near Golden, but only about 500’ elev gain. New Year’s Eve on the Great Sand Dunes - Dec 31, 2005 - Jan 1,2006 (Sat/Sun) Join the Indian Peaks Group, Sierra Club, in s memorable New Year’s Eve sy one of the most unique places in Colorado - the Great Sand Dunes National Park. After hiking out onto the dunes and setting up camp, we will climb to the top of Star Dune to watch the sun set across the dunes before returning to camp for a gourmet dinner and celebrating the New Year under the stars. This hike is only about 2.5 mi each day, w about 1000’ elev gain on the first day. Hiking on the dunes can be exhausting, however, and with the possibility of snow and below zero temperatures participants should be fit and prepared!
