Outings 2003Conservation Outing: Snowshoe Trip to Lost Lake - February 8, 2003Dr. Tom Veblen will be our expert guest on this easy snowshoe hike through the subalpine forest to Lost Lake in the Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forest. Dr. Veblen will discuss the effects of disturbances such as fire on development of Colorado Front Range forests. Four miles roundtrip and 800-foot elevation gain. Nature Hike: Flagstaff Mountain - February 9 2003 Join naturalist Eliza Rayner on an easy hike around the top of Flagstaff Mountain via the Rangeview, Boyscout, and Ute Trails. Enjoy nice views on this 2.5 miles roundtrip with about a 200 ft. elevation change. X-Country Ski: East Inlet Trail - February 15, 2003 Intermediate X-C ski tour along the East Inlet Trail on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park. 6.4 miles and 780 foot elevation change. Hike: Heil Ranch, Ponderosa Loop - February 22, 2003 This is an easy to moderate hike past some historic ruins to a wonderful overlook of Longs Peak, Mount Meeker, and the Indian Peaks. A little more than 5 miles with 800 ft. elevation gain. Ski Tour: Brainard Lake - February 23, 2003 A moderate ski tour to Brainard Lake with beautiful views of the high Indian Peaks. We'll ski up toward Left Hand Reservoir then turn west along the Little Raven trail in order to descend down to Brainard Lake. Our return will be via either the CMC north or south trail. This trip is 5 to 6 miles round trip with 500 feet elevation gain. X-Country Ski: Mineral Belt Trail - March 1, 2003 Tour Leadville's historic mining district. Intermediate 12 mile roundtrip X-C ski tour along Leadville's Mineral Belt Trail. Geology Hike: Woods Quarry - Saturday March 15, 2003 Easy hike from NCAR to Woods Quarry. Learn about the geologic history of our local mountains and rock formations. 4 miles roundtrip, 300 foot elevation gain. Snowshoe Hike: Heart Lake - Sunday March 16, 2003 A difficult snowshoe hike from East Portal of Moffat Tunnel through the James Peak Wilderness toward Rogers Pass. Heart Lake is a beautiful high alpine lake just above treeline. Round trip is about 7 miles with 2100 feet elevation gain. Wetlands Restoration: Sawhill
Ponds - Saturday April 5, 2003 Wetlands restoration work at Sawhill Ponds Open Space. Sawhill Ponds was once an active gravel mining operation, now a series of ponds important to migratory birds, but with some serious infestations of non-native plant species. We will be planting native willow and cottonwood cuttings, and removing exotic species. Moderate upper-body exercise. Lunch provided. Hike: Nugget Hill - April 13, 2003 Hike past old mines to a great 360° view. Trail is short but steep, a good conditioner hike; 5 miles roundtrip; 1,400 ft. elevation gain. If weather or trail are poor we will do an alternate hike. Hike: Homestead, Mesa, Big Bluestem Trail Loop - Sat April 26 2003 This is an easy to moderate loop hike, 4.5 miles roundtrip with 1,000 feet elevation gain. We'll wander through a nice mix of grassland, pine forest, and creekside habitat and pass some old homestead sites. Training: Outdoor Leadership Workshop, Friday - Sunday, May 2 - 4 Become an outings leader for the Sierra Club. This workshop, for both new and seasoned leaders, will be held at the Keystone Science School in Keystone, CO. The workshop goals include instruction on how to lead safe trips, ensure participant satisfaction, and inspire participant involvement in Sierra Club conservation work. Ponds - Sat May 3, 2003 Wetlands restoration work at Sawhill Ponds Open Space. Emphasis will be on the removal of non-native species. Hike: Coffintop Mountain - Saturday, May 10 2003 IPG John Wade Memorial Hike. Moderate, off-trail hike to the top of Coffintop Mountain. 7-8 miles round trip, 1,500 feet elevation gain. Hike: Mills Lake - Sunday May 11 2003 Moderate hike in Rocky Mountain National Park with a round trip distance of 5 miles. Elevation gain is 700 ft, with a starting elevation of 9,240 ft. This hike is extremely scenic with alpine views and subalpine forest. At the lake is one of the most beautiful scenes in the Park. The hike starts at the Glacier Gorge trailhead. Nature Hike: Lichen Walk - Sunday May 18 2003 Join guest naturalist Barbara Hawke of the Nature Conservancy as we learn about lichens on this easy 3.5 miles round trip hike along the Ann U.White Trail. 600 ft. elevation gain. Hike: Ranger Trail on Green Mountain - Sunday May 25, 2003 This is a moderate hike up Green Mountain via the Ranger Trail. 3 miles roundtrip, 1,200 feet elevation gain. Splendid views of both Boulder and the Continental Divide from the top. Hike: Bear Peak Loop - Saturday, May 31 Climb Bear Peak via Fern Canyon and then loop back along Bear Peak West Ridge. Strenuous, about 7 miles round trip and 2,500 feet elevation gain. A good warm-up for summer climbs in the high country. Hike: Ouzel Falls: Saturday June 7 2003 The Falls should be spectacular as the melting snow fills North St. Vrain Creek and Ouzel Creek in the Wild Basin area of Rocky Mountain National Park. We'll have breathtaking views of Copeland Falls, Calypso Cascades and Ouzel Falls on this moderate 5.4-mile roundtrip trek with an elevation gain of 1000 feet. Long's Peak and Mount Meeker might make appearances too. Hike: Homestead Meadows - Sunday, June 8, 2003 This is a moderate hike with 10 miles round trip and about 2,500 feet elevation gain some of which will be off trail. This is a great hike in an area with beautiful wildflowers, and lovely meadows populated with historic homesteading cabins. Hike: Button Rock - Sunday, June 15th 2003 Moderate hike along the Button Rock Preserve Loop near Lyons. 6 miles round trip, 600 foot elevation gain. Pleasant hike through ponderosa pine and douglas-fir forest. Nice open meadow and wildflowers. Hike: Sky Pond - Sunday June 15 - CANCELLED Strenuous hike to Timberline Fall, Lake of Glass and Sky Pond in Rocky Mountain National Park. Round trip distance is 9.2 miles with a starting elevation of 9,240 feet and an elevation gain of 1,660 feet. Both Lake of Glass and Sky Pond are above the treeline. Along the way you pass the Loch and Alberta Falls. Timberline Falls is along the way with a view of Taylor Glacier. The hike starts at the Glacier Gorge trailhead. Hike: St Vrain Mountain - Sunday June 29, 2003 Strenuous hike to the summit of St.Vrain Mountain (12,162 ft.), 9 miles roundtrip, 3,250 ft. elevation gain. Plenty of wildflowers and great views of Indian Peaks and Rocky Mountain National Park. Hike: Arapahoe Pass/Dorothy Lake - Friday July 4, 2003 Celebrate Independence Day with a hike up the 4th of July valley to Arapaho Pass and Dorothy Lake. 6.6 miles roundtrip, 1,800 ft. elevation gain. Fantastic wildflowers and scenic views. Hike: Heart Lake, James Peak Wilderness - Sunday, July 13 2003 Escape the heat of the city on this moderate hike to Heart Lake along the South Boulder Creek Trail in the James Peak Wilderness Area. Most of the hike takes place in the cool shade of the spruce/fir forest before we break out above treeline near Heart Lake. Roundtrip distance is about 8.5 miles with an elevation gain of 1,800 feet. Limit of 12. Hike: Chasm Lake - Sunday July 20 Strenuous hike with a round trip distance of 8.4 miles. The starting elevation is 9,400 feet with an elevation gain of 2,360 feet. This is one of the most scenic hikes in the park. The hike starts at the Long's Peak Trailhead. From Chasm Lake you are able to view the east face of Longs Peak. Hike: Arapaho Glacier Overlook - Saturday July 26, 2003 Strenuous hike to Arapaho Glacier Overlook via Arapaho Pass Trail. 8 miles roundtrip, 2,200 ft. elevation gain. Short stops along the way to identify trees and wildflowers. Spectacular views. Hike: Summit of Bear Peak - Sunday July 27, 2003 Moderate hike to the summit of Bear Peak via Bear Canyon and West Ridge Trail. Return via Fern Canyon. 7 miles round trip, 2500 ft. elevation gain. Wonderful views of the plains and mountains. Bat Hike: August 8, Friday, 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. Join our guest naturalist Burton Stoner, from Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, on this evening hike as we learn about bat ecology and use echo locators to observe bat feeding habits. This will be an easy/moderate walk of about 2 miles. We will stop at Bear Pond to quietly observe bats and their behavior. The hike will depart from the NCAR parking lot. Restoration Project, Forest Lakes - August 15-17, Friday evening – Sunday Help reroute a trail so that it avoids sensitive wetlands areas on its way to this popular destination in the James Peak Wilderness. Hike: Buchanan Pass Trail - August 24, Sunday Moderate hike along beautiful Middle St.Vrain Creek. Waterfalls and a great view of Sawtooth Mountain on the Continental Divide. About 8 miles round trip, 1,200 feet elevation gain. Hike: Royal Arch - Saturday, August 30 2003 A must-do hike in Boulder. The 3-mile round trip to Royal Arch is a moderate ascent that gains about 1,200 feet in elevation. Some steep sections will reward us with spectacular views of the Flatirons and the unusual rock formation that is Royal Arch. Hike: Isabelle Glacier– Sunday August 31st Length: Long Lake Trailhead to Long Lake - 0.2 miles; to Lake Isabelle - 2.1 miles; to upper lake - 3.7 miles; to Isabelle Glacier - 4.2 miles. DISTANCES ARE ONE-WAY. Elevation: 10,500 feet at the Long Lake Trailhead; 10,868 feet at Lake Isabelle; 12,000 feet at Isabelle Glacier. Difficulty: Easy to Difficult We will climb gradually for 2 miles, through wooded terrain, into the Indian Peaks Wilderness, past Long Lake to Lake Isabelle, which sits just below the tree line. At Lake Isabelle, we will continue along the north side of Lake Isabelle to the source of the South St. Vrain Creek - Isabelle Glacier The Isabelle Glacier Trail ends finally beside Isabelle Glacier in a very steep-walled cirque basin framed by Shoshone, Apache, and Navajo Peaks. Map and Compass Clinic: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Thursday September 11 2003 This interactive clinic, taught by Wilderness Emergency Resources (www.WE-R.org), immerses you in the basic skills of map reading and compass use. Compasses are provided for participant use. $3 donation. Foothills Nature Center, 4201 North Broadway, Boulder. September 14, Sunday – Mt. Sherman Mt. Sherman (14,036’) is one of Colorado’s easier 14ers, but the altitude requires a good level of fitness. This moderate/strenuous 8 mile round trip hike with a 2,800 feet elevation gain affords great views of the Sawatch Range and Arkansas Valley. Limit 8 people. Hike: Twin Sisters Peaks – Sunday September 21st Location: Rocky Mountain National Park Trailhead: Twin Sisters Trailhead. Located across the road from Lily Lake Trailhead Elevation: Approx. 9,000 ft. Maximum Height Achieved: 11,428 ft (East Point), 11,413 (West Point) Total Vertical Ascent: 2,400 ft approximately Round Trip Distance: 7.5 miles. Round Trip Time: 5+ hours Difficulty: Moderate in both length and vertical gain, constant grade 2003 HIKE-A-THON - Saturday, September 27, 2003 to Benefit Boulder County Wildlands When was the last time someone told you to take a hike?
Well, here is your chance to do just that while supporting a good cause. The Sierra Club-Indian Peaks Group (IPG) and the Wildlands Restoration Volunteers (WRV) are sponsoring a hike-a-thon on Saturday, September 27, 2003 at Walker Ranch on Boulder County Open Space. The proceeds will be used on a WRV habitat restoration project in Boulder County and on IPG conservation projects (including fire mitigation efforts). Our goal is to have 50 hikers collect pledges from friends and family and come hike on September 27.
There will be yummy refreshments and fun prizes for participants. Participants have the choice of a long hike or a short one: a 9-mile loop or a 3-mile route. We will have aid and encouragement stations along the route.

Trail Repair: Poudre Canyon - Saturday - Sunday, September 27 - 28 Gateway Mountain Park Work Project Poudre Canyon, near Fort Collins Sierra Club outings leader and Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) crew leader Lisa Lewis will be leading a crew from the Sierra Club to help give back to Colorado. This is a Volunteers for Outdoors Colorado Project. The City of Fort Collins' newest mountain park, Gateway Mountain Park, is situated on the elbow of a large bend in the Wild and Scenic Poudre River. Opened to the public during the summer of 2002, the park provides residents of Northern Colorado with easy access to the amber-colored Poudre River and its rugged and pristine surrounding landscapes. Currently, the park has very limited trail resources available for nature

Moderate/strenuous hike to Pear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, Wild Basin. Enjoy beautiful autumn weather while munching on gourmet pears at a high picturesque lake.12 miles round trip, and about 2700 feet elevation gain. Pears will be provided. Hike: Arapahoe Pass– Sunday, October 12 2003 Length: 2.7 miles each way from the 4th of July Campground to Arapahoe Pass. Elevation: 10,000 feet at the campground trailhead, 11,906 at the Pass. Difficulty: moderate Join us for a moderate hike up the 4th of July Valley to Arapaho Pass. The hike is approximately 6 miles roundtrip. We will start at the 4th of July Trailhead (~10,000ft) and hike up a moderate grade about 3 miles to Arapahoe Pass (on the Continental Divide) at about 11,900 feet 1,900 ft. elevation gain. Great wildflowers and scenic views. Hike: Windy Peak, Golden Gate State Park - Saturday, October 25 2003 Moderate 5-mile loop hike to the top of Windy Peak (just over 9,000 feet in elevaton). Approximately 1,000 foot elevation gain. Fall colors with a great view. Hike: South Boulder Peak - Sunday, November 9 2003 Hike to the top of South Boulder Peak via Shadow Canyon. This fairly strenuous climb at moderate pace will culminate with great views to the plains and mountains. 5 miles roundtrip, 3,000 foot elevation gain. Hike: Lily Mountain - November 9, Sunday Join Indian Peaks Group for a day hike to Lily Mountain near Rocky Mountain National Park. The views of Moraine Park, Twin Sisters, Longs Peak and Lake Estes are spectacular from Lily Mountain.Although relatively short in length, this is a strenuous hike up a steep incline with a serious rock scramble towards the summit. Around 1000 feet will be gained on this 3.6 mile roundtrip hike, requiring a high degree of fitness. Hike: Mesa Trail - November 15, Saturday Hike the Mesa Trail beginning at Eldorado Springs and ending at Chautauqua Park. Leader will arrange car shuttle. Essentials including extra warm clothing, extra Description: Hike: Fourmile Canyon - Sunday December 14 2003 Join the Indian Peaks Group of the Sierra Club on an easy 3 mile round trip hike with a gently sloping route (elevation change 560' in 1.5 miles) along Fourmile Canyon Creek in Boulder. The route crosses a stream multiple times. Savor a winter wonderland of little pools, miniature waterfalls, and groves of aspen at a slow pace. As an added bonus, learn about preventing hypothermia. What to Bring: Ten Essentials. You will need waterproof boots with good lugs in case of snow or ice.
